York River State Park

Last Sunday (we seem to be consistently about a week behind on our blog posts - sorry!), Ben and I went a little north of Williamsburg to York River State Park to enjoy the beautiful sunny weather. It was a bit hot but otherwise fun. We rented a kayak for an hour - something we've never done before - and paddled around the creek there as well as along the edge of the York River (although we didn't want to stray too far since we aren't experienced with kayaking). Besides a horrible blister on my thumb, and my camera bag (but not my camera, fortunately!) taking a little trip down the creek, we had a great time. (We did rescue the camera bag, but it smells sort of nasty now.)

If we took pictures of the majority of the scenery on our kayak adventure, it would have been of this - creek banks full of fiddler crabs running everywhere:

Below is a fiddler crab up-close. The coolest fact about these is that the males each have a gigantic claw (the equivalent of male peacocks' bright feathers); if they get in a fight with another crab and lose/break the big claw, though, their OTHER claw/foot will grow large instead, and the one that was lost will grow back as the small one.

This part of the shore had shells (clam shells?) of some sort all over it:

This is a view of the York River from our kayak:

After kayaking, we fished at the lake at York River State Park, called Woodstock Pond. We had no luck this time, but on a previous trip when Ben went fishing with my family, he caught an almost-3-pound bass!

There were dragonflies aplenty around the pond, and this one paused long enough for a picture:
