This past weekend, we brought our grand total of fruit picked on the year to 53 pounds. (This does not include the strawberries we picked in Atlanta in May.) Saturday, we returned to Bush Neck Farm, and this time we picked 26 pounds of apples. The farm had over 30 rows of varying types of apples in the orchard. The kinds we picked were ones we've never heard of or eaten before: Summer Rambo and Elstar. The Summer Rambos are the larger, greener ones below, and the Elstars are the small orange-red ones. Apparently, Elstars are an offspring of Golden Delicious, which explains why when I ate one when I got home, I didn't like them. (Golden Delicious are fine for apple pies, but they're too dry to eat by themselves, in my opinion.) Anyway, if you're in the area, come by and get some apple crisp, apple scrumptious, apple pie, applesauce, apple jelly, or apple however-you-want-it :) (And, no, Robert, we are unfortunately NOT going to try and ship any of these items to California. Sorry.)
It seems like there were some winds that came through - look at all these apples on the ground!
And others were mutated in various interesting ways:
This lovely old truck is on the grounds of the farm too, along with a bunch of rusted farm equipment. We're pretty sure it was there intentionally for some sort of old-timey effect, but we couldn't help but recall that this is the current-day look of many a Middle Georgia yard:
